Approach
By deploying urban innovation and resource preservation mechanisms, Gewan Island is poised to generate long-lasting economic, social and environmental value with various features incorporated in the Island’s masterplan, with a strict reporting schedule put in place, to monitor air, soil and water quality, sound levels, energy and water consumption.
Building Design
Different measures were taken into consideration to have a sustainable environmental building design including use of energy saving LED lamps in addition to occupancy sensors and intelligent home automation for better lighting controllability. Daylighting distribution within interior spaces was a design priority, which reduces the reliance on electric lighting and indoor space environments are compliant with optimized acoustic requirements in order to efficiently treat sources of noise from space to space.
Landscape Design
Landscaping design has been planned to nurture biodiversity for fauna and flora through selecting plant species that are native and adaptive, which ensures a low irrigation and maintenance demand and attracts fauna to enhance the ecologically and environmental value of the Island.
Marine Environment
The marine environment surrounding Gewan Island is an important and integral part of the attraction of the Island, therefore UDC is ensuring construction activities don’t harm marine life, but rather sustain the marine ecosystem and encourage new species to live in the waters surrounding Gewan Island
Green Living
The Island provides a plethora of services within walking distance therefore reducing vehicle reliance and encouraging healthy routines of walking and biking through the pedestrian and cycling networks planned, in addition to roads connecting the Island to a proposed public transportation network.
Water & Energy Saving Measures
Energy conservation measures in buildings include high levels of insulation to reduce the energy required for cooling, use of environmentally friendly district cooling technology, use of low water consumption plumbing fixtures and specification of energy efficient appliances in residential units.
